How to Fix a Low Flame on Your Gas Grill by Resetting the Gas Regulator

A weak flame on a propane grill is often the regulator's safety trip, not an empty tank. The regulator cuts flow after a sudden surge. Resetting it usually restores heat.
What is a gas regulator? It meters propane or natural gas from the tank to the burners. A fast open of the tank valve can trip the safety and leave you with a low flame.
Steps to Reset Your Gas Regulator
1. Turn Off the Grill and Gas Supply
- Shut all burners and close the tank valve before you touch the hose.
2. Disconnect the Gas Hose from the Tank
- Unscrew the hose from the propane tank so trapped pressure can vent.
3. Wait a Few Minutes
- Give the regulator a few minutes so the safety mechanism can reset.
4. Reconnect the Gas Hose
- Thread the hose back on snugly so the connection does not leak.
5. Turn On the Gas Supply Slowly
- Open the tank valve slowly. A fast twist can trip the safety again.
6. Light the Grill
- Light one burner and check the flame. If it is still weak, repeat the reset or look for clogged burners or a bad regulator.
Additional Tips
- Inspect for leaks: Brush soapy water on the connection. Bubbles mean a leak.
- Check the burners: Clear debris if the reset did not help.
- Replace old regulators: Many regulators need replacement around the 10-year mark.
If It Still Runs Low
If the flame stays weak after a careful reset, stop and have the system checked. A clogged burner, bad hose, or failed regulator may need parts or a tech visit.
